February has arrived! Don't forget about your one and only
HOMEWORK
for the year!  Friday, February 14, will be our Valentine Exchange Party here at Discovery!  Your "homework" is for you and your child to work together to create a decorated Valentine box and prepare Valentines for this event.  This is a perfect opportunity for you and your child to spend some quality time together while you put your creative skills to work to design a unique Valentine masterpiece.
There are only (2) requirements for your child's box:

Your child's first name AND first letter of their last name must be in bold letters on the top of the  box.

Please leave a large opening on the top.  Often times, children will bring Valentines such as suckers, boxes of conversation hearts, or goody bags.  If the opening of a box is not large enough to accommodate them, it will be passed over.
Other than those minor guidelines, be creative and have fun!!
In addition to their Valentine box, each child will need to bring 20 Valentines.  Given the volume of our collective preschool enrollment, it would be unreasonable to ask parents to provide Valentines for each and every child.  For this reason, we choose to separate the children out into groups based on their age.  Each child will be placed in a group of approximately 20 children.  By doing this, your child's Valentines will be dispersed amongst the 20 children in their group.  These Valentines do not need to be addressed "to" anyone, just be sure they are signed "from" your child.
We have had cases in the past where parents would bring in an unopened box of Valentines.  Please DO NOT do this!  All Valentines are to arrive signed and ready to be dispersed.
Since January's monthly skill was "print your name", you may want to think about possibly encouraging your child to do so on each of their 20 Valentines!  This would provide an ideal opportunity to work with your child at home to help them better their penmanship!  Granted, their tiny little hands may get worn out before they have all 20 finished...but have them write a few each night, and they will have them completed in no time!
We ask that the children's Valentine boxes, Valentines, and any treats they may wish to bring arrive at some point BETWEEN
Friday, January 31 and Tuesday, February 11
It is imperative parents understand that TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 11 is the deadline to bring your child's belongings...NO EXCEPTIONS!  We provide more than a month's notice to ensure everyone has the opportunity to complete this task with their child.  Please understand, our only reasoning behind our strict "deadline" is to make sure that our program is organized and prepared for Valentine's Day.  In order to be certain we allow enough time for each and every child's Valentines to be dispersed, we must begin this task promptly on Wednesday morning.  Unfortunately, if your child's Valentine box and Valentines do not arrive prior to distribution, they may not receive all of their Valentines from their friends.  There is not time to go back and catch up those that are tardy in providing their belongings.
If you have any questions about the Valentine boxes or Valentines, please feel free to ask a Preschool Teacher!
