September 28 - October 2
Theme:  Fall & leaves
Letter:  F
Number:  2
Sign language:  Laugh & play
Now that fall has finally arrived, we will be discussing the change in seasons with the kids.  What are some of the differences between summer & fall?  What have the temperatures been doing?  Are the leaves on the trees all still green, or are they changing color?  What has been happening to the leaves on the trees since the season have changed?
Weekly Reminders!
  • Monday, September 28 - Thursday, October 1:  Rich Osness will be coming to take all of the children's school photos.  This will be our 2nd year working with Rich, and we are very excited to have him back!  More information will be sent home as this week approaches as far which day your child's photo will be taken as well as the procedures for purchase.  Rich takes all of the children's pictures individually, as well as with their siblings free of charge.  Once we receive the hard copies, they will be sent home and at that time you can decide if you are interested in purchasing them!
  • Wednesday, September 30:  Movie Day!
  • Thursday, October 1:  Toys for Tots begins!  Every year, beginning in October, we start taking up a collection of pennies & other spare change to purchase toys for the children in our community who are less fortunate than ourselves.  The kids have always enjoyed adding to our "stocking filled with love" and it is a great way to teach them at an early age what giving back is all about.  They always look forward to placing their pennies in the giant jar each morning and seeing the progress they are making each day in their efforts to fill it up.  We will continue taking any and all donations through Wednesday, November 25.  At this time, we will take the money that the children have worked so hard to collect and divide it in half.  Half of the money collected will be used to purchase toys for the boys, and the remaining half will be used to purchase toys for the girls.  If you are interested in volunteering to purchase a portion of the toys with your child, please let Cindy know and she will follow up with you as we get closer to December.  This is always a fun and rewarding outing for the children since they get to pick out the toys that their pennies paid for!  After our volunteers purchase the toys, we ask that they bring them back to Discovery so we can show all of the kids what they were able to buy because of their hard work and generosity before they are picked up by the Marines!  Last year the kids did an incredible job and managed to raise $485.46 and made sure that a lot of children were able to have a very Merry Christmas!
October 5-9
Theme:  Fire safety
Letter:  H
Number:  Review 0-2
Sign language:  Family & love
Since it is National Fire Prevention Week, we will be learning all about fire safety.  We will focus on 4 basic fundamentals and enforce them throughout the week:
  1. Stay low and go
  2. Get out and stay out
  3. Call 911 for help
  4. Stop, drop, and roll
In addition to our 4 basic fundamentals, we also discuss the importance of having an evacuation plan in the event of an emergency.  We encourage you to talk with your child about an escape plan within your own home to better prepare them for the possibility of a fire or any other emergency  that may occur.  We have numerous of unannounced fire drills throughout the year here at Discovery.  You would be proud to know that the kids have perfected a calm, orderly, and speedy evacuation from their school.
Weekly Reminders!
  • Friday, October 9:  Please send a family picture to school with your child any day this week, but no later than Friday, October 9.  We intend to use it for a project next week, so please send a duplicate in the event it becomes bent, ripped, or misplaced!  You are welcome to give the photo to one of the Preschool teachers, or drop it in the tuition box and we will get it to your child's teacher!
  • We will be working to arrange a visit from the Billings Fire Department at some point during the month of October or early November.  Beings that it is National Fire Prevention Week, they tend to be quite busy making various visits around town.  With that, we will likely push out our visit a couple weeks from now.  However, we will be sure to keep you posted via the landing white board as soon as the exact date and time of the visit are confirmed!
October 12-16
Theme:  My family
Letter:  T
Number:  3
Sign language:  Work & learn
During this week, we will be learning about one another's families.  The children will provide their own descriptions to their peers of how they view their family.  What their parents do, if they have any brothers or sisters, what kinds of pets they have and their names, if they have always lived in Billings or did they move here from another town, fun things they like to do as a family, etc.  This week is all about their family dynamic.
Weekly Reminders!
  • Monday, October 12:  Discovery will be closed for Columbus Day!
  • Tuesday, October 13:  Wear red day
October 19-23
Theme:  Stranger safety
Letter:  I
Number:  4
Sign language:  Hug & care
Stranger safety is one area that cannot be stressed enough with preschoolers!  That being said, with Halloween approaching, we've decided that this would be a great week to brush up on stranger safety.  We will talk to the kids about what classifies a person as a "stranger", give examples of people we can trust, and why we should never accept things from strangers (such as rides, gifts, candy, etc).
October 26-30
Theme:  Halloween
Letter:  U
Number:  5
Sign language:  Help & share
Seeings how we are sneaking up on Halloween, we will spend the week celebrating this spooky holiday!  This means pumpkins, games galore, and a Halloween party to round out a super fun week!
Weekly Reminders!
  • Thursday, October 29:  Book orders are due!  All book orders are to be made payable to Discovery Daycare.  You are more than welcome to place your Scholastic book order online if you prefer.  The class activation code is HHBGQ.  If you have any questions regarding online book orders, please ask Cindy!
  • Friday, October 30:  Halloween Party!  All children are to arrive at Discovery dressed in their Halloween costumes with their regular clothes underneath.  We have lots of games and some spooky activities planned for the kids throughout the day!  The party will be from 9:30-11:00 am.  This will allow us time to change all of the kids out of their costumes before lunch
  •  Please make sure anything that can be labeled with your child's name is marked!  It is very common to have children with duplicate costumes, and names help us get everyone's belongings back in the proper cubby.
  • Please be sure that your child has a bag of some sort in their cubby on this day so that we can put all of their costume articles away after the party.  Also, please check this bag THOROUGHLY prior to leaving for the day to ensure you have your child's entire costume for Halloween night!  If your child has any small, valuable accessories (wands, swords, shields, etc) to their costume that are not absolutely necessary to bring for preschool, please refrain from sending those to school with your child.  While we put forth our best effort to keep track of all of the children's belongings, there are times when the children may take off or put down an accessory and it becomes misplaced.
  • Remember, your child needs to be comfortable in their costumes and must be able to use the restroom while wearing it!
  • Lastly, please avoid sending your child in anything too "spooky" that may frighten the younger children.  Most children's costumes are typically acceptable, however there have been a handful of costumes in the past that the children were a bit skeptical of!  We simply ask that you use your best judgment in this area!
  • Monday, November 2:  We will begin collecting food for our Thanksgiving food drive!  We will be accepting donations until Friday, November 20.  If your child would like to Bring any non-perishable items to donate to the food drive, there will be a box in each classroom and a contest to see which class can get theirs the fullest!  Everything will be donated to the Billings Food Bank on Monday, November 23.
